About the Cardiac Action Group
The Guernsey Cardiac Action Group (CAG) is funded by the Charitable sector, donations from businesses, organisations and the general public. Donations fund our Heart Health work in the community.
CAG strongly believes that providing high quality, operating, life-saving PAD-Sites is critical to saving local lives when a sudden cardiac arrest occurs. Without this the community are unprotected from the impact of Out of Hospital Sudden Cardiac Arrest.
Cardiac Arrest is the ultimate medical emergency. The time between the onset of Cardiac Arrest and a life-saving shock from a defibrillator is critical, with survival rates falling by 10% for every minute that passes without defibrillation. Bystanders who witness a Cardiac Arrest are a key element in the survival of the individual suffering the arrest.
In 2025 CAG will expand its work to build the PAD-Site network as well as maintain the PAD-Sites through its Guardian volunteers.
The objectives of CAG:
- Build a comprehensive PAD-(Public Access Defibrillators ‘PADs) Site network and support system that can be used to save Bailiwick of Guernsey sufferers of Out of Hospital Sudden Cardiac Arrest
- Improve the post-arrest heart health of the people in the Bailiwick due to the wide availability of PAD sites (there has been an improvement of the consequences of a Sudden Cardiac Arrest with victims having less damage to their hearts and major organs because PADs have been readily available to support resuscitation).
- Manage the installation and maintenance of the PAD sites through a network of Guardians who volunteer to clean, maintain and report on the condition of PAD sites so problems can be remediated, and the sites kept in working order for use in the event of an emergency.
- To publicise the location of PAD sites and promote information on how to use an AED.
- Raise awareness of heart disease within the community
Guernsey Cardiac Action Group (CAG) was formed as a registered charity in 1996 by Gerry Le Roy and became the Guernsey Cardiac Action Group LBG on the 1st February 2023.
Guernsey Cardiac Action Group (CAG) is a charity originally set up help reduce deaths and the serious health consequences of Out of Hospital Sudden Cardiac Arrest and to raise awareness of heart disease in Guernsey.
CAG began as a general heart health charity but found the greatest need was to provide free education on sudden cardiac arrest, how to perform immediate cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and how to use an automated external defibrillator (AED) to save a life and the quality of that life. With delivery of CPR and fast AED application, death rates could be reduced and the health impact of a sudden cardiac arrest minimised, resulting in a reduced community cost and maximising the potential for cardiac arrest sufferers to return to a productive community life.
Money raised for the charity originally provided free training, equipment, and resources to increase the chance of survival from a catastrophic, out of hospital sudden cardiac arrest. It also helped build a network of PAD-sites these are locations where the AED machines are stored in the community and maintained by CAG volunteer ‘Guardians’. Working PAD-Sites are the crucial infrastructure that can be used to save local lives.
Training activities and familiarisation with CPR which can save a life in an emergency when time is of the essence. will now be conducted by St John’s Guernsey
