How to use an AED

Cardiac arrest occurs when a person’s heart stops pumping blood around the body and they stop breathing normally.  Early defibrillation can save a life.  The chances of successful defibrillation decline at a rate of about 10% with each minute of delay, so early Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and defibrillation is essential for survival before emergency services arrive on the scene.

Remember, if in any doubt, call the Emergency services on 999 (or instruct someone else to do this whilst you deal with the immediate situation).

1. Turn on the AED: Press the power button or open the device lid to activate it.

2. Expose the chest: Remove clothing and ensure the chest is dry.

3. Apply the pads:

If the pads are joined place the cross in centre of the chest, the pads will fall into correct placement and remove the backing stick firmly to the chest.

If not connected place one pad on the upper right chest (above the breast).

Place the other pad on the lower left chest (side of the ribcage under the breast tissue).

4. Follow the AED prompts: The AED will analyse the heart rhythm automatically.

5. Stay clear: Ensure no one is touching the person while the AED analyses or delivers a shock.

6. Press the shock button: if instructed by the AED, press the button to deliver a shock (the person may twitch when the shock is delivered).

7. Resume CPR: It is safe to begin chest compressions immediately after a shock. Continue to follow the AED prompts until the emergency services arrive.

8. If the person shows signs of life: Stop CPR and reassess.
